Pješačke i biciklističke staze

On foot or by bike through Liburnian walls, Roman remains and along the sea — the whole island in one go.

How the trails came about

Volunteers, dry-stone walls and old paths

The landscaping and linking of the walking and cycling trails began with the “Dry Stone Wall Extravaganza” project of the Argonauta association and its partners, funded by the Agency for Mobility and EU Programmes. The month-long short-term European Voluntary Service project made a great contribution to the trails at Colentum. In one month, European volunteers from five countries (Bulgaria, Italy, Turkey, Spain and Poland) built an access path connecting the Roman maritime villa, i.e. the foot of Gradina hill, with the Liburnian dry-stone walls on the first level of the hill.

This access path made further work on the trails at Colentum easier. The next step was laying out the path on the Liburnian walls around Gradina hill (first level) and the seaside promenade connecting Murter and Betina. The path on the Liburnian walls was built in phases through several volunteer campaigns and was finally completed in the autumn of 2017 through the projects “Dry Stone Wall Extravaganza 3” and “GLUE – Investing in young people”.

Circular trail on Gradina

The main route of Colentum Archaeological Park

In the future, the circular trail on the Liburnian walls will be a kind of main route of the future Colentum Archaeological and Recreational Park. The plan is to connect the trail with smaller paths leading to the more important archaeological spots, the viewpoint at the top of the hill and the beaches below.

The first viewpoint at Colentum was also built along the Liburnian dry-stone wall. It was built under the expert guidance of dry-stone wallers Ive Šikić Bažokić, Pere Kulušić and Dino Lovreškov, with the help of volunteers from the “Dry Stone Wall Extravaganza 2” project. The viewpoint is marked with an information board, and benches made by the young Murter caulker Nikola Skračić Čiči have been installed.

Active tourism

The whole island in one go

The landscaping of trails and paths on Gradina is not yet finished, but it can already be said with certainty that the existing trails are a significant contribution to cycle tourism in Šibenik-Knin County and to active tourism in general.

With 3.5 km of cycling and walking trails on Gradina hill and the connection of two municipalities and the villages of Murter and Betina, the whole island of Murter can finally be explored “in one go” – on foot or by bike.
