Swimming by the remains of an ancient harbour — the only beach in Croatia that brings together the sea, history and archaeology.

Swim by a Roman harbour

On the Gradina peninsula, right next to the Roman maritime villa, the first archaeological beach in Croatia has been created. The archaeological beach, about two hundred metres long, was landscaped before the summer of 2017. Under the supervision of archaeologists and conservators, the beach was covered with gravel, and bins, benches and a floating protective barrier were installed. An information board with instructions for divers and all curious swimmers was also put up.

The first season of the archaeological beach was full of positive reactions from both chance and regular swimmers. This beach is currently the largest beach on Murter, and after the season work continued on its further development.

Shade, a dry-stone wall and peace for swimmers

Led by the Municipality of Murter-Kornati, the neglected forest and olive grove at the Colentum site were tidied up. Clearing the site of shrubs and weeds created shade where swimmers can shelter on hot summer days.

In addition, the dry-stone wall along the beach was restored and a path was laid out within the wall, so that walkers and cyclists do not disturb swimmers and vice versa.
