“The Liburnians were an ethno-maritime group, the people who discovered Colentum before the Romans. They were very skilled at living with the sea and everything that made up the «maritime way of life», but above all they were excellent seafarers who kept the coast and islands under their control. They sided with the Romans as allies. The Romans protected their territory, and in return the Liburnians were the main builders of the imperial navy – the Naves Liburnae fleet, which controlled the entire Mediterranean. Traces of the Liburnians can also be found on the Kornati and in Murter/Colentum, which is also the oldest name of the island.
At the Colentum site there are many finds from the time of Nero and Vespasian – from buildings and coins to gold objects. It was thanks to the conquests of the controversial emperor Nero that the Roman Empire brought its legionaries to the shores of Murter…”
This is roughly how today's history tour began. The visitors heard a little about the owner of the Colentum maritime villa, Senator Marius, and the patrician lady Abelia; we were welcomed by our Roman lady Sanja, many Roman remains were found, the newly installed driftwood swing was tried out, and the fun history trip very quickly turned into an international family party which, after a visit to the Marko Mudronja Repac Collection, ended with a stroll along the most authentic street of the Old Village (Srimač), Get Street.
The trips are free and take place every Wednesday from 9 to 11 am, until 28 August 2019.
You can find out all the details at the info desk of the Murter-Kornati Tourist Board office.
Welcome, and see you next Wednesday!
