Međunarodni arheološki kamp Colentum-Murter

The “Colentum” International Archaeological Camp works on the site of a prehistoric hillfort and an ancient settlement identified with Colentum from the works of ancient authors.

The “Colentum” International Archaeological Camp works on the site of a prehistoric hillfort and an ancient settlement identified with Colentum from the works of ancient authors. The first camp was held in 2012, and the camp's organising team consists of the Argonauta association, the Šibenik City Museum, the University of Zadar and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb. It is designed as a combination of research, lectures and creative workshops and brings together big names in archaeology and underwater archaeology, as well as professors and students from Croatian and international universities. Besides fieldwork, carried out partly on land and partly at sea, the camp includes lectures on relevant topics, various exercises, rehabilitation of the Colentum archaeological site, visits to nearby archaeological sites and so on. The academic value of the camp is assessed at 3 ECTS credits.

Four international archaeological camps have been held so far, with exceptional results. One of the significant findings of the research is that Colentum was more than a maritime villa, as had been assumed until then – Colentum was a large building used from antiquity (1st century) until the 5th or 6th century, and possibly even in the Middle Ages, extending over an area at least 25 metres long. In addition, numerous remains of mosaics, stoppers and various amphora fragments, fragments of fine and coarse pottery, lamps, tegulae and more were found, and underwater research identified the remains of what is believed to be an ancient jetty stretching from the point below Gradina to today's Hramina Marina.
