Projekt Historic

An Interreg Italy – Croatia project for sustainable tourism based on cultural heritage, within which archaeological research of Colentum was carried out in 2019.

About the project

Since prehistory, the northern Adriatic has been a stage for trade and migration. The cultural and natural links between its two shores are widely recognised today, although the general public and mass tourists, who consume tourist resources at a frantic pace, still do not sufficiently appreciate them.

Tourism can enhance and preserve the tangible and intangible cultural heritage on which it is based, but if it is not managed and controlled, it can also degrade and irreversibly damage this valuable heritage. That is precisely why the cultural valorisation of historical heritage is key to creating a sustainable year-round tourism product.

Challenges addressed by the project

  • more conscious, sustainable and responsible use of cultural heritage;
  • more inclusive participation of local people and stakeholders at all levels;
  • smarter coordination of sectors and administrative institutions on both sides of the Adriatic (transport planning, heritage, environment);
  • better management of tourist flows – redirecting seasonal flows from the centre to the periphery, all year round, with a planned and joint technological approach by Italy and Croatia;
  • better accessibility of natural and cultural heritage for people with disabilities, thanks to augmented reality, virtual and web applications and small investments in infrastructure.
