Gradina hill is also interesting because of the many dry-stone walls that surround the area. After the remains of the Liburnian ramparts and more recent dry-stone walls were noticed, it became necessary to restore them, so over the last four years about ten volunteer dry-stone wall restoration campaigns have been held, with particularly important workshops held within the projects \u201cReviving local traditional practices of sustainable use of natural resources of the island of Murter and its natural region\u201d and \u201cLet's restore our dry-stone walls\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2013 and 2014, the educational workshops \u201cLet's restore our dry-stone walls\u201d were held in cooperation with the 4 Grada Dragodid and Modrave Murter-Betina associations, Kornati National Park and Vransko Lake Nature Park. During the project, two educational dry-stone wall restoration workshops were held, as well as a workshop to draw up a joint Action Plan for the systematic restoration of dry-stone walls in the Murter area. An inventory of the dry-stone walls of the Murter area was carried out, and a public discussion and a photo exhibition of dry-stone walls were held. About 15 organisations, associations and institutions, more than 70 volunteers and more than 100 participants took part in the educational workshops. About 150 metres of dry-stone wall were restored during the work campaigns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also, within the project \u201cReviving local traditional practices of sustainable use of natural resources of the island of Murter and its natural region\u201d, implemented by the Argonauta association in cooperation with the Feniks, 4 Grada Dragodid and Modrave Murter-Betina associations and Vransko Lake Nature Park, a work campaign was held to restore the ancient dry-stone ramparts of the Liburnian town of Colentum. The theme of this workshop was to encourage volunteering in order to use and spread knowledge of the traditional skill of dry-stone walling. About fifty volunteers responded. It is also worth mentioning that dry-stone walls on Gradina hill were restored by young geographers, science students from Belgium, who visited Murter through a project run by the University of Zadar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the autumn of 2016, a teambuilding event for the company Iskon was held at Colentum. The main organiser of the workshop was the Dragodid association, joined by the Argonauta association as host and the Murter-Kornati Tourist Board. This teambuilding was a big undertaking for all the organisers, as there were 200 participants. Enough leaders \u2013 dry-stone wallers \u2013 had to be provided, so it was decided to have up to 20 leaders, half from the Dragodid association and half dry-stone wallers from the island of Murter. The main activity of the teambuilding was to restore the old dry-stone path at the top of the Gradina peninsula connecting Murter and Betina. At the start of the workshop, the leaders divided the participants into groups and then demonstrated the basic building techniques. In just a few hours, the participants left their mark on Colentum \u2013 part of the old path was restored, as well as part of the dry-stone wall by the Liburnian rampart and parts by the beach on the Betina and Murter sides. Through recreation, many metres of retaining wall were repaired and people mastered the basics of dry-stone walling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dry-stone walls along the archaeological beach are currently being restored. The walls are being restored by staff of the Kornati National Park Public Institution in cooperation with the Municipality of Murter-Kornati and the Argonauta association. The walls here had long been neglected and had collapsed, so they needed to be restored. In addition, this wall is part of architect Vinko Pera\u010di\u0107's project and the establishment of the Colentum Archaeological and Recreational Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although a great deal of work has been done through all these campaigns and many dry-stone walls have been restored, there is still room for new workshops. There are many dry-stone walls left on Gradina hill that need restoring, and the most time and effort will be needed to restore the Liburnian ramparts, which are the most demanding. This opens up space for new projects, but also the need for volunteer campaigns to clean and restore dry-stone walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
