Ten young volunteers from Poland, France, Spain and Bulgaria decided to spend thirty autumn days in Murter for the Stone & Sail Extravaganza project, implemented through the European Solidarity Corps programme with the financial support of the European Union and organised by Argonauta, the association for the protection of nature and the environment and the promotion of sustainable development.

Autumn in Murter was marked by the volunteer work of young people from 4 European countries who decided to dedicate their skills, enthusiasm and free time to Raduč hill, the Colentum archaeological beach and the maritime culture and tradition of the island of Murter.

After their month on the island, Murter can boast new access paths on Raduč, a new coat of varnish on the benches and the swing at Colentum, and the promotion of Murter's maritime culture in the volunteers' home countries. In other words, thanks to the commitment of these young people, these public spaces have been restored and can calmly await the winter and rainy days, and walkers and lovers of Raduč hill, with its indescribable view of the Kornati, can enjoy new paths that did not exist a month ago.

On the other hand, these young volunteers are returning home with new skills, knowledge and experience and, most importantly, with new friendships made during their stay in Murter. We used every fine day for outdoor work, and on rainy days the volunteers had the chance to attend various workshops (Croatian language, media literacy, reflection techniques and the like) run by staff of the Argonauta association and their associates from other local associations.

An important part of this project is connecting with the local community and promoting the opportunities and benefits of volunteering, as well as the realisation that by working together and investing energy, many steps forward can be made which together result in visible benefits for both the volunteers and the local community they became part of through this project.

It is also worth mentioning that all citizens of the European Union aged 18 to 30 can join European Solidarity Corps programmes, and the experience gained from this kind of volunteering broadens horizons, changes perspectives and reveals new opportunities for young people, and therefore for the local communities to which they return after such rich experiences.
